Kenya Railways increases fare Following Increase in Fuel prices

Kenya Railways company has increased fares across all routes in the country by 50 per cent. In the latest review, a passenger travelling to Mombasa will now pay Sh1,500 effective January 1, 2024, up from the current Sh1,000. Tickets purchased before then will, however, not be affected. For those who wish to travel with first class, they will have to pay Sh4,500, up from Sh3,000. “This increase is informed by changes in that energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased thus increasing the cost of operations,” Kenya Railways said. SGR To Go Cashless From February

Kenya Railways (KR) plans to implement cashless ticketing on its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) service beginning February 1, 2022. According to a statement issued by KR on Wednesday, passengers will no longer be able to pay for tickets at all Madaraka Express Passenger Service Stations on the aforementioned date and will be required to use cashless at all service points. Customers have been advised to use M-Pesa, debit, or credit cards to pay. Until now, the SGR operates two pairs of trains between Nairobi and Mombasa, with departures at 8 a.m., 3 p.m., and 10 p.m. First-rate coaches cost Ksh.3000 for adults and Ksh.1500 for children aged 3 to 11. The Economy coach costs Ksh.1000 per adult trip and Ksh.500 for children aged 3 to 11.

Passengers using Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway trains will from this month not be allowed to pay cash to travel. The Kenya Railways Service over the weekend announced that they will be operating cashless payments only. "As from August 1, the acceptable payment mode for your Madaraka Express train ticket will be debit/credit card and Mpesa, "reads the notice.
