Matiang’i declares Tuesday public holiday to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has declared Tuesday as a public holiday to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr. In a gazette notice on Tuesday, Matiang'i declared May 3rd a public holiday in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act. The festival of Idd-ul-Fitr, the Festival of Fast-breaking, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.  Muslims gather in mosques or open spaces and offer two units of prayer – called "Rakat". The prayers are followed by a sermon, in which the imam asks for forgiveness, mercy, and peace for every being across the world.

Muslim faithful have began marking the Holy month of Ramadhan. The moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on Monday night, April 12. Jamia Mosque Nairobi said through its Twitter handle that fasting begins on Tuesday, following the moon sighting. “Ramadan has been announced in Saudi Arabia and many countries,” said famous teacher and cleric Mufti Menk of Zimbabwe Ramadhan is a Holy month of fasting, devotion and prayer. The month lasts for lasts around 29-30 days. Muslims of good health are called upon to abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. They are also encouraged to partake in charity, teachings, kindness and general acts of good which praise Allah and enhance cohesion in humanity.
