President Suluhu has accepted to support my AU bid – Raila

Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Thursday revealed that Tanzanian President Suluhu Hassan has accepted to support his African Union job bid. There have been speculations that Tanzania could front former president Jakaya Kikwete to face Raila in the elections for the AU Commission chairperson elections. Speaking in Marani in Kisii, Raila said Suluhu had accepted to back his bid for the top continental job and that he is ready to lock the East African Community bloc. There is a standoff between police officers and protesters in the Nairobi CBD as demonstrations called by Azimio la Umoja kicked off.  Police have been engaged in running battles as they lob teargas to disperse protesters across the city.  At around 10.00 am, a delegation of Azimio MPs led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna stormed the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). The senator and the protesters scampered as teargas was lobbed, with those who had started gathering outside KICC also taking cover. A similar situation has been witnessed in Kibra Constituency, where protesters barricaded roads and hurled stones at police officers who had been deployed there. Raila Odinga, the Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya presidential flagbearer, has cast his vote at Old Kibra Primary School in Kibra constituency. While making his entry to the polling station, Raila was surrounded with a mammoth of crowd, who blew vuvuzelas and whistles as his motorcade made entry to the premise. The ODM boss walked into the polling station at around 10:30 am alongside his wife Mama Ida Odinga and part of his security team. Polling clerks and officials guided him throughout the voting process and left immediately. His wife Ida voted in a different stream but in the same polling station.

Speaking at the Kamukunji grounds on Sunday, the former Prime Minister said he will name the person that will deputise him in the August 9 General Election at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) from 11 am. "Nimeangalia hali ya anga na nataka kuwaambia kwamba kesho saa tano kule KICC nitatangaza," Raila said. Odinga, speaking in a virtual rally on Friday, castigated the country’s judicial system for prioritizing the arrest of petty offenders instead of going after high-profile persons facing more serious crimes such as graft charges. The ODM party leader was referring to the case of one Alvin Linus Chivondo, a man who was sentenced to a year in prison after he pleaded guilty to stealing cooking oil at a local supermarket on Monday.

Deputy President William Ruto resumes his tour of Nairobi county on Tuesday, with rallies planned across sub counties perceived to be ODM leader Raila Odinga’s strongholds. Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga could be the latest public figure to have a road in Nairobi named after him should county assembly members pass a motion backing the move sponsored by Minority Whip Peter Imwatok. The motion, whose notice was tabled last week and is set to be moved this week, wants Mbagathi Way renamed Raila Odinga Road, ostensibly in recognition of the former prime minister’s contribution to the growth of the country by championing good governance, democratic ideals and development of infrastructure.
