Journalists Covering Demos In Kibra Attacked By Knife-Wielding Gang, Robbed

Journalists from local and international news outlets were attacked by a knife-wielding gang in Kibra on Monday while covering the first day of bi-weekly anti-regime protests. Several others were injured after a rowdy gang pelted their vehicles with stones within Kibra's DO area. According to Jase Ndungu, a journalist covering the protests in Kibra, an armed gang descended on journalists covering the protests, forcing them to flee for their lives. Former Chief Justice Mutunga Appointed MUHURI Board Chair

Mutunga, who served as the country's Chief Justice from 2011 to 2016 was elected unanimously. He takes over from Khelef Khalifa. A statement by MUHURI noted that Mutunga's grasp of matters human rights and the law will help the body advance its goal of fighting impunity. "He brings an immense wealth of experience especially in the civil society and human rights sectors," the statement reads in part. MUHURI added that his track record of defending the law will help boost constitutionalism in Kenya. Mutunga joined the Mombasa-based non-governmental organization as a board member in 2021.

Senegal Opposition Leader Claims Assassination Attempt As Deadly Protests Flare

Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko claimed Monday to have survived an assassination attempt during his appearance at a politically charged trial that sparked deadly unrest last week. Sonko, a fierce opponent of President Macky Sall, has been receiving medical treatment since he was allegedly sprayed with tear gas and manhandled while authorities escorted him to a courthouse on Thursday. In a Facebook post that evening, Sonko said he was suffering "terrible dizziness", lower abdominal pain and breathing difficulties. Linton P Gordon, a lawyer for Bolt, has claimed that the Jamaican’s account once had $12.8 million (£10m), but now reflects a balance of only $12,000 (£9,700), money that was supposed to fund his retirement.
