At least 10 killed in IED attack on matatu in Mandera

At least 10 passengers were Monday killed and many others wounded when their matatu ran over a bomb set on the road along the Arabia-Mandera Highway. The matatu was ferrying an unknown number of passengers to Mandera Town on Monday morning when it ran over an Improvised Explosive Device. Witnesses said the death toll may rise because the victims had serious injuries. Police said at least eight other passengers were seriously injured in the incident. Police suspect the explosion was set up by al-Shabaab militants operating in the area after crossing the porous Kenya-Somalia border. Police have now dispelled reports of a looming terror attack in the country. Speaking to a local media station on Friday, January 28, police spokesperson Bruno Shioso noted that they are yet to receive reports regarding the alert. He, however, assured Kenyans of their safety noting that security has been increased in the Nairobi Metropolitan and the entire country. An earthquake rocked western Afghanistan on Monday, killing more than 20 people and destroying hundreds of homes, local authorities said. The 5.6 magnitude tremor shook the western province of Badghis, bordering Turkmenistan, in the afternoon, reducing brick homes to rubble, according to photos shared by local authorities. Security heightened in Nairobi ahead of DP Ruto tour

Security has been beefed up in Nairobi ahead of Deputy president William Ruto’s tour. Ruto is expected to tour Roysambu area on Friday. He will be at Marurui via Kiambu Road at 9am. From there he is expected in Kahawa West Roundabout at about 10am and Soko ya Mawe, Githurai 44 at 11am. Ruto will visit Zimmerman, Kamiti Road at noon before going to TRM, Roysambu Roundabout, Santon, Mwiki, Njiru shopping centre and Njiru/Ruai junction. Police has said there will be traffic jams on the roads occasioned by the rallies. Motorists have been urged to avoid the routes for the better part of the morning to avoid the expected traffic jam.
