Primary school teacher who defiled class six pupil sentenced to serve 20 years in jail

A 45-year-old primary school teacher who defiled a 13-year-old pupil in 2016 was on Wednesday sentenced to serve 20 years in jail. Fredrick Mwangi was sentenced by Milimani senior principal magistrate David Ndungi after the court found him guilty of the offence. The magistrate said the prosecution had proved its case against him. While passing the sentencing, the magistrate jailed the teacher with the sentence saying it is the minimum sentence for such an offence as provided by the law. "The accused who is a teacher defiled a child. The rights of his children are not superior to that of the child he defiled, I hereby sentence him to 20 years in prison as provided by law," ruled the magistrate.  Mwangi was accused of defiling the minor who was a class six student wh...

Government extends nationwide curfew by another 30 days

The government has extended the existing Covid-19 containment measures for another period of 30 days. Health CS Mutahi Kagwe on Monday said the country is yet to hit the World Health Organisation recommended positivity rate of five per cent for a consistent period of 14 days. "The containment measures including the curfew hours of 10 pm to 4 am will remain there and this is for two reasons... number one is that we are still as far as the positivity rate is concerned we are still above the WHO recommended figures in terms of two weeks period when you have got less than 5 per cent of positivity rate at a high testing level," Kagwe said. He added: "We need the 30 days and extend the time to so that we can vaccinate as many people during that period as possible." The CS said a...

Ethiopia to expel seven senior UN staff for ‘meddling’

Ethiopia said on Thursday it would expel seven senior UN officials for "meddling" in its affairs, ratcheting up worries over the humanitarian response in the war-torn and famine-threatened Tigray region. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was "shocked" by the decision, expressed full confidence in his staff in Ethiopia and said the UN was engaging with the government "in the full expectation" that the officials would be allowed to return. According to diplomats, an emergency UN Security Council meeting will be held behind closed doors midday on Friday to discuss the matter. The White House condemned the ejections of the UN staffers "in the strongest possible terms" with Press Secretary Jen Psaki calling it "unprecedented action to expel the leadership of all of the...

Uhuru hints and endorses Raila in Kibera

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday gave the clearest signal he is backing ODM leader Raila Odinga as his preferred successor. The President made the revelation when addressing a gathering in Kibra where he was accompanied by Raila for a tour of development projects. The president opened two hospitals in the populous area that Raila represented as MP for decades. President Kenyatta for the first time left no doubt that he wanted someone who would continue with his development plans after he exits in 2022. He heaped praises on Raila for accepting to enter into a handshake with him in March 2018 saying the peaceful environment that followed helped his legacy projects. “When we came together, didn't we experience peace? So where is the problem? Isn’t that what we want? D...

Germany’s centre-left secures narrow win against outgoing Chancellor Markel.

Germany’s centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) secured a narrow win over outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives in national elections with party leader Olaf Scholz claiming a “clear mandate” to form the government for the first time since 2005. Preliminary results on Monday morning showed the SPD on track for 26.0 percent of the vote, ahead of 24.1 percent for Merkel’s CDU-CSU conservatives, the worst by the CDU in 70 years. Figures on the election commission’s website showed the Green party came third with 14.8 percent. An official announcement from the Federal Returning Officer is expected shortly. With neither main group commanding a majority, and both reluctant to repeat their awkward “grand coalition” of the past four years, the most likely outcome of the vote i...

Four family members were on Friday night burnt to death after their house was razed by a fire at Taru in Kinango subcounty. The fire claimed the lives of a mother and her three children. Kwale police confirmed the incident. According to the report released by police on Saturday, the four family members were identified as Samia Kikoi, 32, Husnein Hussein, 10, Mulhat Hussein, 6, and Ilham Hussein, 1. Police who rushed to the scene could not immediately establish the cause of the fire. However, locals believe a candle might have caused the fire. Efforts by residents to put out the fire and rescue the four proved to be futile. Loc...

President Uhuru Kenyatta launches second naval base in Manda Bay

President Uhuru Kenyatta has opened a strategic naval base to secure Kenya’s territorial waters and protect the Lamu Port South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (Lapsset) project. The Manda Bay Forward Operations Base (FOB), which played a key role in the capture of Kismayu by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in September 2012, was yesterday upgraded to a full naval base. The FOB was crucial in planning during Operation Linda Nchi, a cross-border offensive against the Al-Shabaab who had been making regular trips into Kenyan territory and causing chaos. While presenting the presidential and regimental colours, President Kenyatta said his government is determined to protect Kenya’s territory, explaining that the base will play a key role in achieving that. Presidential colour...
