Gunmen In Nigeria Kill A Dozen People, Abduct Others From Mosque

Gunmen in Nigeria killed a dozen worshippers, including an imam, and kidnapped several others from a mosque on Saturday night, local residents said on Sunday, in the latest attack by armed gangs in the north of the country. Armed gangs, known as bandits, attack communities where security is stretched, killing people or kidnapping them for ransom. The gangs also demand villagers pay protection fees to be allowed to farm and harvest their crops. The Spanish coast guard has rescued three people who were stowed on top of the rudder of a ship that arrived in the Canary Islands from Nigeria. In a photograph distributed by the coastguard on Monday, the migrants are shown perched on the rudder of the oil and chemical tanker Althini II. The Althini II arrived in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria on Monday after an 11-day voyage from Lagos in Nigeria, according to Marine Traffic, a ship-tracking website. The migrants were taken into the port and attended to by health services, the coastguard said on Twitter. At Least 50 Killed In Massacre At Catholic Church In Southwest Nigeria

Gunmen attacked a Catholic church in southwest Nigeria during mass on Sunday, killing at least 50 people including women and children, according to a hospital doctor and media reports. The gunmen shot at people outside and inside the church building, killing and injuries worshippers, said Funmilayo Ibukun Odunlami, police spokesperson for Ondo state. Female Student Killed By Mob At Nigeria School Over Religious Comments

A female student in northern Nigeria was killed by a mob who stoned, beat and set fire to her for allegedly posting a blasphemous statement against the Prophet Mohammed, according to police. The girl, Deborah Yakubu, was surrounded by fellow students and attacked on Thursday, a police statement said. The incident happened at the Shehu Shagari school in Sokoto, northwestern Nigeria, and the school was immediately closed. 26 dead in latest Nigeria gang raid

Gunmen have attacked villages in Nigeria's central Plateau state killing at least 26 people, with more feared dead. The attackers on motorbikes stormed at least four remote villages on Sunday in Kanam area in the state, shooting people dead. Most of the victims were children. The gunmen also stole cattle and burnt down homes. Residents say at least 20 bodies have been found in the village of Gyambau while at least six have been recovered in the village of Kyaram. More killings were reported in the villages of Dungur and Kukawa. A number of people are still missing and hundreds have been displaced. The authorities say more security forces are being deployed to the area.
