Former US First Lady Rosalynn Carter Dies At 96

Former U.S. first lady Rosalynn Carter, who President Jimmy Carter called "an extension of myself" owing to his wife's prominent role in his administration even as she tirelessly promoted the cause of mental health, died on Sunday at age 96, the Carter Center said. Rosalynn Carter, who in recent days had entered hospice care at home in Plains, Georgia, died with her family by her side, according to a statement released by the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization founded by the couple. Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, served as president from 1977 to 1981. He and his wife were the longest-married U.S. presidential couple, having wed in 1946 when he was 21 and she was 18. After his single term as president ended, he has also enjoyed more post-White House years than any president b...

Amber Heard Questioned About Drug Use in Recent Court Proceedings

Amber Heard returned to the witness stand on Tuesday to continue testifying under cross-examination in the $50 million defamation case with ex-husband Johnny Depp. After testifying over several days that Depp's drug and alcohol use would turn him into a "monster" who would be violent with her, an attorney for Depp pointedly questioned Heard about her own drug use, including scheduling time for "drugs" at the couple's 2015 wedding. "Who was the real monster in this relationship, Ms. Heard?" asked Depp's attorney Camille Vasquez on Tuesday. "It's half of Johnny. It's not all of Johnny. The other half of him is wonderful and beautiful and the man I loved," Heard testified. Depp has accused Heard of defaming him in a 2018 op-ed for the Washington Post. In the piece, which publ...

Tanzania Raises Minimum Wage By Nearly 25%

Tanzania's president on Saturday approved a nearly 25-percent increase in the minimum wage, marking a departure from the policies of her autocratic predecessor amid protests about the high cost of living. President Samia Suluhu Hassan decided on an increase of 23.3 percent, while also increasing the salaries of government workers for the first time since 2016, her office said in a statement. "The salary increment was approved considering the country's gross domestic product, domestic revenue and developments in both the local and global economies," the presidency said. Since coming to power last year following her predecessor John Magufuli's death, Hassan has attempted to break with some of his policies by reaching out to the opposition and reversing course on his approach to...

Man Charged With More Than 400 Sexual Offenses Against Children

A man in Western Australia has been charged with more than 400 sexual offenses against children in what police are calling one of the most significant child abuse investigations in the state's history. The 47-year-old from Perth faces 240 counts of indecent dealing with a child under 13, 98 counts of indecently recording a child under 13, and 44 counts of sexual penetration of a child under 13, Western Australia police said in a statement Wednesday. He also faces 26 counts of possessing -- and five counts of producing -- child exploitation material. The charges follow a months-long investigation sparked by a tip off in July last year. Searches were carried out at the man's home and workplace, during which multiple electronic storage devices were seized, police said. Aft...
