More Pain For Gikomba Traders After Another Fire Incident

Property of unknown value has been destroyed following a fire incident in the wee hours of Thursday morning at Gikomba Market. According to reports the fire broke out at Jua Kali area razing down shedloads of stalls, with traders now calling for a lasting solution to the perennial fires. Meanwhile, traders and firefighters are at the scene in efforts to put out the inferno. Over the years, a number of fires have ravaged Gikomba market, East Africa's largest open market.  In October 2017, the government said that it had laid a Ksh.19 billion blueprint to construct a multi-storey market where the more than 20,000 Gikomba traders were to be accommodated as well as ensure an end to the frequent fires. Kuria: We’ll Ban Mitumba Once We Find An Alternative

Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria says the government will ban the importation iof second-hand clothes, commonly known as ‘mitumba’, once they find an alternative from the local textile industry. Kuria while speaking at the Chamngamka Shoping Festival in Nairobi on Tuesday pointed out that Kenya exports locally made fabric at a cheaper price than it imports the second-hand clothes. He said his ministry is focused on empowering the local textile industry. “Whatever is required for us to sell to our people the same way we are selling to America, we will do.
