Meta To Lay Off Employees In Metaverse Silicon Unit

Meta (META.O) is planning to lay off employees on Wednesday in the unit of its metaverse-oriented Reality Labs division focused on creating custom silicon, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday. Employees were informed of the layoffs in a post on Meta's internal discussion forum Workplace on Tuesday. The post said they would be notified about their status with the company by early Wednesday morning, one of the sources said. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the plans. Reuters was not able to determine the extent of the cuts to the silicon unit, called Facebook Agile Silicon Team, or FAST. Facebook Owner Meta Releases AI Model That Can Identify Items Within Images

Facebook owner Meta published an artificial intelligence model on Wednesday that can pick out individual objects from within an image, along with a dataset of image annotations that it said was the largest ever of its kind. The company's research division said in a blog post that its Segment Anything Model, or SAM, could identify objects in images and videos even in cases where it had not encountered those items in its training. Using SAM, objects can be selected by clicking on them or writing text prompts. In one demonstration, writing the word "cat" prompted the tool to draw boxes around each of several cats in a photo. Kenyans to start paying 16% VAT on Facebook and Instagram Ads from November 1

Meta, Facebook’s parent company has announced that all Facebook ads in Kenya will be subject to value-added tax (VAT) VAT beginning this November.  The social media giant said this in a statement issued on Wednesday on their business help centre. ‘’Beginning November 2022, Meta ads in Kenya are subject to a value-added tax (VAT) at the applicable local tax rate. This applies to all advertisers whose ‘Sold To’ country on their business or personal address is set to Kenya.’’ the statement read.
