Former IEBC Boss James Oswago Jailed For 4 Years

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO James Oswago has been jailed for four years after he was found guilty of irregular award of a Ksh1.3 billion tender for the supply of voter materials in the 2013 General Election. The Anti-Corruption Court on Monday ordered Oswago and his deputy, Wilson Shollei, to each pay a fine of Ksh. 7,500,000 or in default serve a total jail term of 4 years for two counts.  Senior Principal Magistrate Felix Kombo found the two officials guilty of abuse of office and wilful failure to comply with the procurement laws. Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera has resigned days after President William Ruto suspended her and three other commissioners. Cherera is the second commissioner to hand in her resignation after Justus Nyang’aya decided to vacate his post last week Friday. Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata has been cleared by the IEBC to run for the Murang'a Governor seat in the upcoming August General Election. Kang'ata was cleared along with his running mate Winnie Mwangi, who had earlier been barred from vying after IEBC determined that she had failed to resign within the legal deadlines.  According to reports, Ms Mwangi did not resign by February 9 in violation of the Elections Act, which requires public officers seeking elective seats to resign six months before an election. IEBC Announces 418,000 Temporary Jobs Ahead Of August Elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced a total of 418,192 short-term job opportunities ahead of the August 9 General Election. IEBC is looking to recruit deputy county returning officers (47), deputy constituency returning officers (290), presiding officers (52,481), deputy presiding officers (52,841), logistics officers (389) and support electoral trainers (5,827). The elections authority is also looking to enlist 580 ICT clerks, 302,860 polling clerks, 47 county based voter educators, 290 constituency based voter educators and 2,900 ward-based voter educators All interested parties should apply for the positions on IEBC’s online portal, where requirements for the slots will be available, before May 6, 2022.

Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege wants Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to reschedule her 'vote rigging' case citing health conditions. Through her lawyers James Orengo, Otiende Amollo and Martin Aloo, the lawmaker asked for another date saying she is unwell and admitted to Nairobi Hospital. The case was scheduled for hearing on Tuesday morning before IEBC's Electoral Code Conduct Enforcement Committee. The electoral agency has awarded the tender for ballot papers and the voter register for use in the 2022 general election to a Greek firm at about Sh2.8 billion. Documents obtained by the Star reveal that the commission settled upon Inform Lykos (Hellas) as its provider for the materials in a framework contract for three years. The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission, in a notice to one of the bidders, said Inform Lykos was the bid with the lowest evaluated responsive price at 7,172.85 Euros (Sh921,326) for 3,000 ballot papers. Chebukati dismisses claims of postponing 2022 polls

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has dismissed reports on the possibility to postpone the 2022 general elections. Chebukati said elections will be conducted next year as stipulated in the Constitution. "I have seen reports of plans to delay the general elections. IEBC for a fact does not react to opinions from organizations or individuals," he noted. The commission's chairman noted that IEBC is guided by the law which highlights that the next general elections will be held on August 9, 2022.
