Meta To Lay Off Employees In Metaverse Silicon Unit

Meta (META.O) is planning to lay off employees on Wednesday in the unit of its metaverse-oriented Reality Labs division focused on creating custom silicon, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday. Employees were informed of the layoffs in a post on Meta's internal discussion forum Workplace on Tuesday. The post said they would be notified about their status with the company by early Wednesday morning, one of the sources said. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the plans. Reuters was not able to determine the extent of the cuts to the silicon unit, called Facebook Agile Silicon Team, or FAST. If the cuts are deep, they could hamper Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg's project to build augmented and virtual reality products enabling access to a set of ...

Atletico Down Osasuna In Tense Liga Clash

Atletico Madrid backed up their impressive derby victory over Real Madrid at the weekend with a 2-0 win at Osasuna in La Liga on Thursday. The three points took Diego Simeone's side up to fifth place, six points behind surprise leaders Girona with a game in hand. "In the first half we were better, we controlled the game better, but in the second I think that fatigue made us lose strength," said Simeone. Atletico dominated the opening period and deservedly took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to a left-footed drive from French international Antoine Griezmann. Osasuna battled hard in the second half and thought they had equalised when David Garcia headed home in the 75th minute. However, the goal was ruled out and Osasuna coach Jagoba Arrasate was sent off for protesti...

Taiwan Unveils First Domestically Built Submarine

Taiwan unveiled its first-ever domestically built submarine on Thursday, an accomplishment the island democracy’s leader hailed as a significant milestone as Taipei works to boost its military deterrence in the face of a growing threat from Beijing. President Tsai Ing-wen presided over a ceremony at the submarine’s shipyard in southern Kaohsiung city where the diesel-electric vessel was officially named “Narwhal” in English and “Hai Kun” in Mandarin – which can be loosely translated as “sea monster”. “The submarine is an important realization of our concrete commitment in defending our country,” Tsai said. “It is also important equipment for our naval forces in developing asymmetric warfare strategies.” In the past, many people thought building an indigenous submarine would b...
