President Ruto Expected At Safaricom Ethiopia Launch

President William Ruto is expected to attend the National Launch of Safaricom Ethiopia Friendship Square in Addis Abeba. The Head of State has been invited to the event as a guest of honor, along with his counterpart, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed. Safaricom PLC CEO Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Anwar Soussa, and Safaricom Ethiopia chairman Michael Joseph will also be present. The event is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m.

Egypt denounces Ethiopia’s move to fill Nile dam

Egypt has denounced Ethiopia's decision to begin filling the reservoir behind its giant hydropower dam on the Blue Nile for a second year. The Egyptian irrigation minister, Mohamed Abdel Aty, said he'd received official notice of the filling from Ethiopia and had categorically rejected it. He said in a statement that the "unilateral" move was "a violation of international laws and norms that regulate projects built on the shared basins of international rivers, including the Nile River". The minister has also written to the United Nations Security Council informing it of the latest measure by Ethiopia, the statement adds. Ethiopia declares state of emergency in Amhara.

Ethiopia has declared a state of emergency in the southern part of Amhara regional state amid violence in various towns. In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry of Defense said the last three days saw deadly armed violence in the town of Ataye and several other areas in Oromia special zones. The statement said an unspecified number of people were killed in attacks by gunmen and property was destroyed. It added that many civilians fled the armed conflict. The Amhara region is dominated by the ethnic Amhara group – Ethiopia’s second-largest – but the Oromo special zone is populated mainly by Oromos, the numerically dominant group.
