Liberia’s presidential race goes to run-off

A run-off election will be held next month in Liberia following a photo finish between President George Weah and his main rival Joseph Boakai. Mr Weah got 43.83% of the vote and Mr Boakai, a former vice-president, received 43.44%. The 10 October poll was the tightest presidential contest in Liberia since a civil war ended about two decades ago. A run-off was predicted, but Mr Boakai, 78, has done better than expected by coming close to Mr Weah's tally. A second round was triggered as neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the first round. The run-off is due to take place on 14 November, the head of the electoral commission Davidetta Browne said after announcing the final results. A father who wanted to sell his three albino children for use in witchcraft rituals was arrested in Mozambique before being able to close the deal, police said on Monday. Police in the northwestern region of Tete, said three children aged nine to 16 were rescued at the weekend after an anonymous tip-off. Their uncle was arrested alongside their father. Siaya Senator James Orengo has been given a direct ticket in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for his gubernatorial race in the August General Election. Orengo will be running against former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) in the race to succeed Cornel Rasanga. This comes ahead of ODM's primaries in Siaya County which are slated for Wednesday, April 13, for the parliamentary seats, MCAs and the woman representative. The signing was done by the Secretary Generals of constituent parties of the coalition at the Ngong Racecourse, Nairobi.
