More Pain For Gikomba Traders After Another Fire Incident

Property of unknown value has been destroyed following a fire incident in the wee hours of Thursday morning at Gikomba Market. According to reports the fire broke out at Jua Kali area razing down shedloads of stalls, with traders now calling for a lasting solution to the perennial fires. Meanwhile, traders and firefighters are at the scene in efforts to put out the inferno. Over the years, a number of fires have ravaged Gikomba market, East Africa's largest open market.  In October 2017, the government said that it had laid a Ksh.19 billion blueprint to construct a multi-storey market where the more than 20,000 Gikomba traders were to be accommodated as well as ensure an end to the frequent fires. The Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji has urged form four leavers in Garissa to take up the teaching profession in order to bridge the huge gap of teacher shortage in the county. Haji said as long as the local community shies away from the profession, the region will continue to lag behind in education due to teacher shortage. Kenya Receives Additional Ksh.15.5 Billion Financing From IMF

Kenya has unlocked Ksh.15.5 billion ($127.4 million) in additional financing from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This follows successful discussions to amend the country’s ongoing program with the multi-lateral lender to provide additional financing. In a statement Tuesday night, the IMF says the extra financing which is equivalent to $162.84 million worth of special drawing rights (SDRs) covers external financing needs resulting from drought and challenging global financing needs. $1=Ksh.121.67 The additional financing is expected to trickle in as part of the ksh 52.4 billion fourth tranche loan from Kenya’s 38-month program which currently awaits the approval of the IMF Executive Board. The California Winemaker Who Created Two Buck Chuck Has Died

Fred Franzia, the California winemaker who created the Trader Joe's wine popularly known as Two Buck Chuck, died on Tuesday. He was 79. Franzia's death was announced by the Bronco Wine Company, the vintner he founded with his brother, Joseph, and cousin John in 1973. The company said Franzia believed in creating high-quality wines at an affordable cost to consumers. The company's Charles Shaw wines famously sell for just $1.99 a bottle. Franzia died at his home in Denair, California. A cause of death was not provided. Students of Kakamega High rushed to hospital following stampede

A stampede at the Kakamega High School has led to 13 students being rushed to the Kakamega County General Hospital for treatment. The students are said to have fallen from the first floor of a building block while rushing out of their classroom. The students were running in haste after a fight broke out in the class. It is alleged that two students had been involved in an altercation when one student pushed the other while throwing punches at each other. Soon after, one student fell to the ground when a steel guard rail on the staircase snapped. Panicked onlookers soon rushed out of their classes which later resulted in a stampede.
