Police in Uganda have arrested a woman who was captured on video allegedly forcing her four-year-old stepson to eat his faeces. Esther Nabirye, 26, was apprehended on Monday after the video, which had already gone viral, caused an uproar from the public prompting the police to take action. Confirming the arrest, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said that Nabirye is already in police custody and charges of child torture have been filed against her. He further lauded the neighbours who were swift to film the woman, condemning the heinous act which he labelled as inhumane and barbaric. Masked Gunmen In Nakuru Storm Radio Station, Rob Presenters Live On Air

A radio station in Nakuru County was reportedly robbed while presenters were live on air on Thursday night. The robbery at the Mwinjoyo FM studios, which was caught on camera in a now viral video, occurred as the presenters were going about their show normally. Midway through the video, a group of gun-wielding men in dark clothing and masks are seen storming the studio and ordering the presenters to switch off the transmission and lie on the floor. At some point, one of the thugs confronts one of the presenters who is already lying down, asking them “nini unafanya wewe?” (what are you doing?) before stepping on them. They then proceed to query the presenters on whether there is somebody else in the premises, presumably at an office upstairs, and whether there are CCTV came...

WhatsApp Rolls Out Business Payment Tool In Brazil

Meta Platforms on Tuesday began rolling out its payments tool to small and medium-sized firms through its WhatsApp messaging platform in Brazil, part of Meta's strategy to use the Brazilian market as a key test space for business messaging. The development of business messaging has become all the more urgent as Meta's core advertising business has stalled. The service, provided in partnership with payment processors including MercadoLibre's Mercado Pago, Itau Unibanco's Rede and Cielo, will allow WhatsApp users to make purchases and pay directly through the app with credit and debit cards from Mastercard and Visa, Meta said in a statement. The tool will initially be available for some merchants that use WhatsApp Business. Clients of WhatsApp's API, which mainly serves large b...

Lampard Urges Chelsea To Emulate 2012 Shock Run To Euro Glory

Frank Lampard has urged Chelsea to ignore the turmoil enveloping his struggling side as he invoked the memory of the Blues' incredible run to Champions League glory in 2012. Lampard is back in charge of Chelsea until the end of the season after replacing the sacked Graham Potter last week. After watching Chelsea crash to a lacklustre 1-0 defeat at Wolves in his first game in charge on Saturday, Lampard takes them to Real Madrid for a daunting Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday. Chelsea are languishing in 11th place in the Premier League after a dismal campaign that included Thomas Tuchel being sacked in September and Potter lasting only seven months before his dismissal. The west Londoners have managed to progress to the last eight in Europe despite thei...

Crisis Looms In Counties As Governors Say Treasury Yet To Disburse Funds For Four Months

Operations in a majority of counties have been paralysed following the delayed disbursement of funds from the National Treasury for four consecutive months. According to Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, who appeared before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee on Thursday, Treasury owes county governments about Ksh.96 billion arrears accrued from January this year. Governors have decried the dire situation saying they’re staring at the possibility of strikes by county staff over delayed salaries. The financial crisis across all counties continues to deepen with the devolved units now entering the fourth month without their monthly disbursement from the exchequer. This is the longest time the devolved units have gone without receiving cash from the National Trea...

Facebook Owner Meta Releases AI Model That Can Identify Items Within Images

Facebook owner Meta published an artificial intelligence model on Wednesday that can pick out individual objects from within an image, along with a dataset of image annotations that it said was the largest ever of its kind. The company's research division said in a blog post that its Segment Anything Model, or SAM, could identify objects in images and videos even in cases where it had not encountered those items in its training. Using SAM, objects can be selected by clicking on them or writing text prompts. In one demonstration, writing the word "cat" prompted the tool to draw boxes around each of several cats in a photo. Meta has teased several features that deploy the type of generative AI popularized by ChatGPT, which creates brand-new content instead of simply identifying...

Mukumu Girls High School has been closed indefinitely after two students died and scores more were infected with bacteria from contaminated food and water. One student is said to be recovering in the intensive care unit. Jared Obiero, Western Regional Director of Education, confirmed the incident to the media on Monday. According to Obiero, the decision to suspend school learning came after consultations between the school, the Ministry of Education, and the county government. In recent weeks, the school has made headlines after a large number of students were hospitalized with vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness. In late March, 72 students from the Kakamega County-based school were admitted to the Kakamega County General Hospital, with health officials suspecting a Chole...
