Three Women Killed As Gold Mine Collapses In West Pokot

Three women were killed and two others were injured when the walls of a mine they were digging collapsed on Wednesday morning in West Pokot's Nyelnyel area. According to Ptokoch Sub-location Deputy Chief Flomena Karotich, the women, aged 20 to 32, had gone to mine for gold on the mine when the walls collapsed and buried them alive. Karotich stated that residents in the area were quick to respond to the incident and immediately began rescue operations, which began around 3 a.m. and were able to retrieve the bodies of the three by 7 a.m. However, Karotich has urged area residents to pursue other business opportunities and abandon mining, citing the dangers it poses to human life.
