Estonian President Kaljulaid arrives in Kenya for 3-day official visit

The President of the Republic of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid has arrived in the country for a three-day official visit. She was received at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by the Foreign Affairs CS Amb. Raychelle Omamo, and her Defense counterpart Dr. Monica Juma. President Kaljulaid is expected to hold high-level bilateral consultations with President Uhuru Kenyatta in the course of the day at State House, Nairobi. Kaljulaid has also been scheduled for meetings with the CEO of Safaricom and Bolt, and the European Union delegation this morning. Ex-MP Lempurkel arrested over Laikipia skirmishes

Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel has been arrested from his home in Rongai, Kajiado County over ongoing clashes in Laikipia. He was later moved to the DCI Nairobi area for questioning and possible transfer to other places including Nakuru and Nanyuki. It is not clear what he was being accused of over the clashes in Laikipia but police said he was a person of interest and would be allowed to talk to journalists later. His supporters started to mill outside the Nairobi DCI offices on learning he was there. The former MP was later driven to Milimani law courts by police who were armed with a sworn affidavit. Sri Lanka’s parliament has approved a state of emergency declared by the president, who said it is needed to control food prices and prevent hoarding amid shortages of some staples. Opposition legislators on Monday said the emergency declaration is not needed because other laws can be used to maintain essential supplies, and the tough emergency rules can be misused to stifle critics. The emergency law enables authorities to detain people without warrants, seize property, enter and search any premises, suspend laws and issue orders that cannot be questioned in court. Police officers have once again been warned against erecting any roadblock anywhere without official approval. Further, no vehicle should be detained on the road for long hours without explanation. The fresh move came after a meeting between Inspector General of police Hilary Mutyambai his deputy Edward Mbugua, regional commanders and county commanders in Nairobi.
