Popular Philippine Radio Journalist Gunned Down

A popular Philippine radio host and prominent critic of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte was shot and killed late Monday night. Authorities say Percival Mabasa was sitting in his car outside his home in Las Pinas when two people on a motorcycle opened fire and later escaped. Mabasa, known professionally as Percy Lapid, accused Philippine government officials of corruption and other abuses and irregularities on his popular radio program for decades. The New York Times says Mabasa criticized ex-President Duterte’s violent anti-drug campaign and perceived attempts by supporters of the Marcos family to portray the current president’s father, who ruled the Philippines as a dictator from 1965 to 1986, as a victim of his political enemies. Maba...

Musk Offers To Close Twitter Buyout Deal At Original Price

Elon Musk on Tuesday offered to push through with his buyout of Twitter at the original agreed price, as a trial over his efforts to withdraw from the deal loomed. The world's richest man said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that he sent Twitter a letter vowing to honor the contract. The latest twist in the long-running saga came ahead of the high-stakes court battle launched by Twitter in an attempt to hold the Tesla chief to the deal he signed in April. Musk's potential stewardship of the influential social media site has sparked worry from activists who fear he could open the gates to more abusive and misinformative posts. "We write to notify you that the Musk Parties intend to proceed to closing of the transaction," read a copy of the letter to ...

Beijing Marathon To Return After Two-Year Covid pause

Thousands of runners will line up for the Beijing Marathon in November after a two-year Covid pause, organisers said, as sporting events gradually return to China. The world's most populous country has cancelled almost all international sports competitions since Covid emerged there in 2019, with the Beijing Winter Olympics in February this year a rare exception. Race organisers said on Tuesday that 30,000 runners would be able to take part in the 26-mile (42-kilometre) course through the capital on November 6 - but only Beijing residents can register. China is the last major economy wedded to a zero-Covid policy, stamping out virus flare-ups with snap shutdowns, mass testing and lengthy quarantines. The table tennis world team championships kicked off last Friday in the me...

The Obamas Returned To The White House For The First Time In Years To See Their Portraits Unveiled

Former president Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, on Wednesday made their first official visit to the White House since leaving in 2017 to see their official portraits unveiled. It's a tradition started in 1978 by Jimmy Carter that was broken when Donald Trump refusedto host his predecessor. But on Wednesday in the East Room, President Joe Biden rolled out the welcome mat, calling Barack Obama one of the most "consequential presidents in history." Barack Obama thanked Sharon Sprung, the artist who painted Michelle in a blue dress as she's seated on a sofa in the Red Room, for capturing everything he loves about his wife, including her "grace, her intelligence, and the fact that she's fine." Barack Obama then thanked Robert McCurdy for his photorealistic portrait, saying h...
