22 Migrants abducted in Mexico have been rescued from hotel

Some 22 suspected migrants who were abducted by gunmen at a hotel in Mexico have been rescued, authorities say. They were kidnapped when armed men stormed the Sol y Luna hotel in the central city of Matehuala in the early hours of Tuesday. The victims, who include children and a pregnant woman, are mostly from Haiti and Cuba, Reuters news agency reported. Earlier accounts had said some were Venezuelan. The gunmen also kidnapped 16 Mexicans. The kidnappers had arrived in three SUVs, the prosecutor's office in San Luis Potosi state said. They also took the hotel's logbook of guests, complicating the search. The state's attorney general Arturo Garza Herrera said: "I am going to notify the migration institute so that they can be involved since we do not know the migratory s...

TikTok rolls out support to combat suicide searches

TikTok has announced a set of features to help users struggling with mental health issues and thoughts of suicide. The features include guides on wellbeing and support for people who are struggling with eating disorders. There is also a search intervention feature that directs users to support resources if they look up terms such as "suicide". The move comes as rival platform Instagram comes under fresh scrutiny over its impact on users' wellbeing. In the announcement TikTok said: "We care deeply about our community, and we always look for new ways in which we can nurture their well-being. "That's why we're taking additional steps to make it easier for people to find resources when they need them on TikTok. The new resources, which the company said will be rolle...

Haila was Shot dead while visiting a friend house for dinner.

When he left their home in Moyale to Nairobi in 2018, Haila Asanake had only one dream: to get a job and support his family. He had never been to school. His mother had died and the father was sickly and poor. Haila's uncle took care of him and his two siblings. At Huruma in the city, the 17-year-old was lucky to get a temporary job as an apartment caretaker and he settled. But Haila's life was cut short when a stray bullet hit him. He died while undergoing treatment. Haila was watching a scuffle between police and members of the public from a balcony on the third floor of a residential building in Huruma. A police officer who was scaring away the crowd that had charged at them accidentally shot him. Haila’s uncle Abraham Cheme, who had been taking care of the deceased bef...

Ex-MP Lempurkel arrested over Laikipia skirmishes

Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel has been arrested from his home in Rongai, Kajiado County over ongoing clashes in Laikipia. He was later moved to the DCI Nairobi area for questioning and possible transfer to other places including Nakuru and Nanyuki. It is not clear what he was being accused of over the clashes in Laikipia but police said he was a person of interest and would be allowed to talk to journalists later. His supporters started to mill outside the Nairobi DCI offices on learning he was there. The former MP was later driven to Milimani law courts by police who were armed with a sworn affidavit. The officers planned to seek permission from police to hold Lempurkel for days as they investigate him over the chaos. It is not the first time the former ...

US issues travel advisory against Kenya

The United States has issued a travel advisory against Kenya over Covid-19 and terrorism. In a notice on Wednesday, the US said its citizens should reconsider travel to Kenya due to Covid-19.  “Exercise increased caution in Kenya due to crime, terrorism, health issues, and kidnappings. Some areas have increased risk,” the advisory read. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice for Kenya due to Covid-19. This indicates a high level of Covid-19 in the country.  In June, the CDC  issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Kenya due to Covid-19, indicating a moderate level of Covid-19 in the country. But on Wednesday, CDC said one risks contracting the disease when they visit Kenya.

China battles worst Covid outbreak since Wuhan

A Covid outbreak first discovered in the Chinese city of Nanjing has spread to five provinces and Beijing, with state media calling it the "most extensive contagion after Wuhan". Almost 200 people have been infected since the virus was first detected at the city's busy airport on 20 July. All flights from Nanjing airport will be suspended until 11 August, said the Global Times. Officials also began city-wide testing amid criticism for their "failure". All 9.3 million of the city's residents - including those visiting - will be tested, said state-controlled Xinhua news. Posts on social media show long lines of people queuing, and authorities have reportedly urged people to wear masks, stand one metre apart and avoid talking while they wait. Officials said the hig...

Italy to lift mandatory masks outdoors as pandemic slows

People in Italy will no longer have to wear masks outdoors from June 28, the government has said, as COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations decline in one of Europe’s worst-hit countries by the pandemic. Mandatory masks were imposed in October last year, when the country was entering a second wave of infections and authorities were struggling to curb a surging national caseload. Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government has been steadily lifting restrictions since April, allowing restaurants, bars, cinemas and gyms to reopen and permitting freedom of movement around the country. The wearing of masks was one of the last rules to remain in place. It will not be lifted entirely, the government said on Monday; people will still be required to wear masks in indoor public areas and ...

Kenya gets 130,000 jabs of AstraZeneca from DRC.

Kenya has received 130,000 more doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. The vaccines, which arrived in Nairobi on Thursday morning, came from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has said it is unable to administer about 1.3 million doses before expiry on June 24. The DRC received 1.7 million doses through Covax on March 2 but has only administered a paltry 400,000 over fears the vaccine could lead to rare blood clotting Unicef redistributed the remaining doses to several countries including Kenya, Central African Republic, Ghana, Senegal and Togo. Head of vaccines deployment task force Dr Willis Akhwale confirmed the doses arrived safely in Nairobi. He said another 136,000 are remaining from Kenya’s vaccination exercise countrywide. The total 266,000 doses wil...

Hoteliers urge Uhuru to reopen hotels.

Local hospitality industry players have called on the government to consider allowing hotels and restaurants to reopen immediately. The hospitality sector was hit hard after President Uhuru Kenyatta locked down five counties and closed restaurants and bars. “It is painful seeing staff stay home jobless yet they have families to support. It’s a pity that hotels and tourism industry players in Kenya are not given the ears required," PrideInn Group Managing Director Hasnain Noorani said. In 2020, when the President first announced measures to prevent the virus from spreading, the monetary and fiscal authorities followed up with a number of measures to safeguard businesses and individuals from the ensuing economic hit. “The government has been silent on measures to give busine...
