13 Elephants To Be Flown Into Kenya From The UK

Kenya is set to receive a troop of 13 elephants from the United Kingdom to be released into the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary in Kwale County. The elephants which were raised at the Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, UK, will be transferred in a joint project by UK-based nonprofit Aspinall Foundation, the Kenya Wildlife Services and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. According to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the project involves returning captive elephants in Europe across the 7,000-kilometer journey to Africa for rewilding The authority says that the herd has been living as a family in the UK and needs to be rewilded together to maintain the family bonds of the animals’ social structures. WHO cautions against use of vaccine passports.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has advised countries against demanding proof that travellers have vaccinated against coronavirus. At present, proof of immunisation against diseases such as yellow fever is required at some international borders in accordance with the International Health Regulations.  The WHO said although there is evidence vaccination breaks the chain of transmission, the current inequity in distribution makes such requirements unfair and unethical. “Do not require proof of vaccination as a condition of entry, given the limited (although growing) evidence about the performance of vaccines in reducing transmission and the persistent inequity in the global vaccine distribution,” said a statement summarising the International Health Regulations Emergen...

Dozens killed in Malindi road crash

At least 14 people died in a road crash on the Malindi-Kilifi Highway on Wednesday morning.  The accident involved Muhsin bus from Mombasa to Garissa and a Sabaki shuttle minibus heading to Mombasa from Marereni. Kilifi county commissioner Kutswa Olaka confirmed 15 people died and another 14 were injured in the crash. Both drivers died on the spot. There are also several Kilifi county government employees who have died from the crash. Eyewitnesses said the bus heading to Garissa was overtaking and lost control hitting the shuttle killing over 20 and leaving many others in critical condition.
