Apple Finally Will Let You Encrypt iCloud Backups. Here’s Why That’s Important.

Apple will let people encrypt most data backed up to iCloud from their iPhones and iPads, the company announced on Wednesday. The feature will be available in the US later this month and around the world in 2023. Previously, Apple only encrypted sensitive information, such as people’s health data, credit card information, and passwords. But the new feature, known as Advanced Data Protection for iCloud, will allow users to encrypt device backups, which contain a copy of most personal data on an iPhone and iPad, in addition to notes, voice memos, photographs, and more, "end-to-end". Encrypting data end-to-end means that the digital key required to unlock it is only stored locally on someone’s device, as opposed to on a server somewhere. No one, including hackers or the company the...

Twitter Says Layoffs To Begin Friday

Twitter said it will start laying off employees on Friday, as the new billionaire owner Elon Musk moves quickly after his big takeover to make the messaging platform financially sound. A company-wide email seen by AFP says Twitter employees will receive word via email at the start of business Friday, California time, as to what their fate is. It does not give a number but the Washington Post and New York Times reported that about half of Twitter's 7,500 employees will be let go. "In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global work force," the email said. Twitter employees have been bracing for this kind of bad news since Musk completed his mammoth $44 billion (around Ksh.5.4 trillion) acquisition late last w...

Musk Offers To Close Twitter Buyout Deal At Original Price

Elon Musk on Tuesday offered to push through with his buyout of Twitter at the original agreed price, as a trial over his efforts to withdraw from the deal loomed. The world's richest man said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that he sent Twitter a letter vowing to honor the contract. The latest twist in the long-running saga came ahead of the high-stakes court battle launched by Twitter in an attempt to hold the Tesla chief to the deal he signed in April. Musk's potential stewardship of the influential social media site has sparked worry from activists who fear he could open the gates to more abusive and misinformative posts. "We write to notify you that the Musk Parties intend to proceed to closing of the transaction," read a copy of the letter to ...

Instagram’s Dream Is To Fill Your Feed With ‘Amazing’ Posts Of People You Don’t Follow – CEO

The Meta-owned platform has been on the receiving end of criticism in recent days for its focus on video more than photos on its Feed. Just last month, Instagram was forced to sideline some of its updates after massive uproar from users worldwide who criticised it for trying to imitate its younger video-sharing competitor TikTok. But users have not been taking issue with video alone. The platform has lately been prioritising algorithmically generated suggested content over ‘friends’ content, which has also drawn its fair share of backlash. In a video message shared Tuesday, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri however clarified that suggested content is here to stay and that it is, actually, the “future of the Feed.” According to the Instagram boss, the platform hopes to make ...

An Idaho based Company Is Being Sued For Selling Location Data Used To Track People Seeking Abortions

The federal government sued an Idaho-based company that collects and sells geolocation information for hundreds of millions of mobile devices, saying that the data can be used to track people seeking or providing abortions. In a complaint filed Monday in US District Court, the Federal Trade Commission said Kochava Inc.'s data can show mobile device users' visits to abortion clinics, places of worship, homeless and domestic violence shelters, and other sensitive locations. According to the complaint, the agency was able to identify a mobile device that visited a reproductive health clinic and then trace that same device back to a single-family home in the data broker's free, publicly available data sample. The lawsuit alleges that the data sold by the company could then be used t...

Nokia To Quit Russian Market

Nokia will pull out of the Russian market, the Finnish telecoms provider said on Tuesday, a day after rival Ericsson decided to suspend its activities in the country indefinitely. Hundreds of mainly Western companies have announced the suspension of their activities or their departure from Russia since the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February and the severe sanctions against Moscow. Nokia, which stopped deliveries to the country in early March, "can now announce that we will exit the Russian market," the mobile telecoms giant said in a statement. The move will result in a provision of 100 million euros ($108.6 million) in Nokia's first quarter accounts, published on April 28, the group said. Russia accounted for less than two percent of Nokia's 2021 net sales and the group s...

Charge Your Mobile For Free Along Luthuli Avenue,Nairobi

Kenyans visiting the capital can now charge their mobile phones along Luthuli Avenue – and for free.   The charging booths are the latest additions put in place to change the face of Kenya’s most populous business street. The charging booths are the brainchild of Keith Migiro – who came up with the idea after running out of charge countless times while running errands in Nairobi town. Phone charging is a universal concern – especially when you find yourself outdoors. This is what prompted Migiro to start scratching his head for a solution. He seems to have found a solution - with many Kenyans using the street now flocking to enjoy the free service. “I decided to put up a free charging booth after enduring a nasty experience while in town. I am sure many people...

WhatsApp announces new web features

WhatsApp has announced that it is introducing new feature updates for the messaging application’s desktop version commonly known as WhatsApp web. One feature is the user can control and manage calls while using the app on the web. The user can now turn off all desktop incoming calls and incoming call ringtones. "The second one is a new interface for Contact Info, Business Info, Group Info,” the website said.  This is similar to the interface a user can see on their Android or iPhone when they are looking at a contact or group info. The features will be seen by the users once they update the WhatsApp web version. For others, however, their versions will be updated after some time. Users can also edit photos and preview links in the web version as well. With...

Twitter tests internal ‘dislike’ button for select iOS users

Twitter is testing a new feature where users will be able to upvote and downvote replies on tweets, saying this is still not a 'dislike' button. “Some of you on iOS may see different options to up or down vote on replies. We're testing this to understand the types of replies you find relevant in a convo," Twitter said on Thursday. "...so we can work on ways to show more of them." The testing is currently being done on a select group of iOS users. Twitter said users downvotes aren’t public, while their upvotes will be shown as likes. "Your downvotes are visible to you only. Votes won’t change the order of replies,” the micro-blogging website said. The thumb down icon is a downvote that lets you know that you think the reply isn’t relevant to the conversation. “We...
