Raila’s sister Dr Wenwa appointed to Kemri board

ODM leader Raila Odinga's sister Dr Wenwa Akinyi Odinga has been appointed as a member of the Kenya Medical Research Institute board. Health CS Mutahi Kagwe appointed her alongside Prof Timothy Mwololo Waema, Dr George Njoroge and Marstella Bahati Kahindi. They will serve for three years from May 17. The changes were gazetted on Friday.

Kenya gets 130,000 jabs of AstraZeneca from DRC.

Kenya has received 130,000 more doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. The vaccines, which arrived in Nairobi on Thursday morning, came from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has said it is unable to administer about 1.3 million doses before expiry on June 24. The DRC received 1.7 million doses through Covax on March 2 but has only administered a paltry 400,000 over fears the vaccine could lead to rare blood clotting Unicef redistributed the remaining doses to several countries including Kenya, Central African Republic, Ghana, Senegal and Togo. This is after a team of doctors at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital successfully removed the growth that blocked her face, including her nose, and interfered with her breathing. Families are struggling to find beds in hospital for severely ill Covid-19 patients, and where a bed is found, they have to part with hundreds of thousands of shillings in deposit before admission. At least 622 public and private hospitals across the country have been approved as Covid-19 vaccination centres in efforts to have many people vaccinated. Samburu and Elgeyo Marakwet will only have one centre providing Astrazeneca Vaccine. The vaccine will be accessible in nine centres in Mombasa County at hospitals in Mvita,Likoni,Chngamwe,kisauni and Nyali.
