Bahati and Edwin Sifuna trade harsh words online

The war of words between Kenyan musician Kevin Bahati Kioko and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna is far from over as the two continue to throw salvos at each other. The two have been trading harsh words on social media following Sifuna’s announcement that Bahati had stepped down in favour of the ODM candidate in Mathare constituency, Anthony Oluoch. Sifuna shared a short clip of the Jubilee party leadership confirming that Bahati was no longer in the Mathare race. In his words, the ODM SG alleged that he will only accept Bahati’s apology through his wife Diana Marua - this after the singer lectured him over what he termed as propagating fake news about his candidature. “F*ck you Mr Sifuna. Keep your mouth away from mentioning my wife in your cheap politics! Have some res...

Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata has been cleared by the IEBC to run for the Murang'a Governor seat in the upcoming August General Election. Kang'ata was cleared along with his running mate Winnie Mwangi, who had earlier been barred from vying after IEBC determined that she had failed to resign within the legal deadlines.  According to reports, Ms Mwangi did not resign by February 9 in violation of the Elections Act, which requires public officers seeking elective seats to resign six months before an election. She was a lecturer at the University of Nairobi for more than 25 years before being chosen as Kang'ata's running mate. Kang'ata, who was swift to respond, attributed the mishap to malice, claiming that candidates in the race had banded together to undermine her ...

IEBC Disqualifies 2 Presidential Aspirants

The first aspirant to face the clearing table at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to get the green light for a presidential bid was independent candidate Patrick King'ori and his running mate Winfred Nyang'au. The duo appeared before IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati on Sunday at the commission’s National tallying centre at Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi.   They were, however, found wanting on several fronts, with Ms. Nyang’au failing to submit her certificate of good conduct.  The biggest undoing for them came from their list of supporters; out of the requisite 48,000 submitted, only 65 were found to be satisfactory to the IEBC. “It’s not yet over, we feel lucky today in as much as we have a few shortcomings regarding incomplete paperwork. 11 Presidential Aspirants Disqualified Over Failure To Present Running Mates To IEBC

Eleven presidential aspirants have been knocked out of the race after failing to beat the deadline of presenting their running mates to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision (IEBC). IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati on Monday said the ANC party and the Democratic Party are the only outfits that did not make the cut. The other 9 who failed to name their running mates are independent candidates.  This brings down the crowded field of those seeking to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta from 54 down to 43. At the same time, the commission has extended the deadline for submission of signatures from May 23 to May 25 as it moves to clear presidential candidates ahead of the August 9 polls.  Aspirants are required to submit at least 2,000 signatures from across 24 c...

Women In Power Across Europe

Elisabeth Borne, a 61-year-old engineer, was named French prime minister on Monday, becoming only the second woman to hold the position after Edith Cresson, a Socialist, who lasted less than a year in the job in the early 1990s. Borne is one of nearly a dozen female political leaders in Europe, where Ursula von der Leyen became the first president of the European Commission in December 2019. We look at the situation across the continent: - Denmark - Social Democrat leader Mette Frederiksen became her country's youngest-ever prime minister in June 2019 when she was elected premier at the age of 41. Denmark's first woman prime minister was Helle Thorning-Schmidt, also from the Social Democrats, who served from 2011 to 2015. - Estonia - Former EU auditor Kersti Kalju...
