Koinange daughter chosen to run for Kiambaa MP on Jubilee ticket.

The family of Paul Koinange has picked Lenah Koinange, daughter of the former cabinet minister Mbiyu Koinange to vie for the Kiambaa seat on the  Jubilee party ticket. Through spokesman Leonard Karuga, they said 10 family members were interested in the seat but they had agreed to support Lenah. “It was a tough decision but we all agreed to support Lenah who is Koinange’s last born,” Karuga said. He said the family was not at crossroads on who to select, calling the choice a show of democracy to agree on one person to face other aspirants. Lenah said, with the blessings of the family, if elected she would work diligently to fulfil the dreams and works of her father. A section of elders also endorsed Lenah and called on Kiambaa people to rally behind her. Koinange...

The Sudanese government on Monday officially approved a bill cancelling the law on boycotting Israel. "Today a draft bill abolishing the law on boycotting Israel was approved in a joint meeting for the Sovereign Council and the Council of Ministers," said Justice Minister Nasr-Eddin Abdul-Bari on his Twitter account. Earlier in the day, Chairman of Sudan's Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan chaired a joint meeting for the council and the cabinet at the presidential palace in the capital Khartoum. The abolished law, which was enacted in 1958, forbids dealing and trading with Israel, with a penalty of up to 10-year imprisonment for violators. Chad’s President Idriss Deby dies.

Chad's President Idriss Deby Itno has died of injuries suffered on frontline, the army said on Tuesday. Deby won re-election according to provisional results Monday. Deby, 68, was on course for a sixth term in office after winning 79.32 percent of April 11's presidential election, according to the provisional results from the electoral commission. Having already notched up 30 years in office, he was one of the longest-serving leaders in the world. But the vote was marred by a rebel offensive launched in the country's north on election day. The army said Monday it had killed 300 rebels and quashed the offensive. Deby's long survival in the region's brutal politics has made him a reliable figure in the French-led campaign against jihadist insurgents in the Sahel...

Activist Kiama released due to lack of sufficient evidence.

A Milimani court has released human rights activist Edwin Kiama unconditionally after the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence for his prosecution. Senior resident magistrate Jane Kamau on Tuesday set the activist free and ordered that the cash bail of Sh500, 000 deposited in court be refunded back to him. While releasing Kiama, Kamau dismissed the application by the prosecution saying that the gadgets obtained from Kiama had been taken to the Communication Authority of Kenya and the report had not been availed. The gadgets include phones and laptops obtained from Kiama. Kiama's lawyer requested the prosecution to release the phones and laptops confiscated from his client. The case will be mentioned on May 21. The court had last week declined to detain h...

Suluhu disappointed as MPs compare her to Magufuli.

Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan has asked parliament to stop debates comparing her with her predecessor John Magufuli. She said she was disappointed that the parliament was discussing her differences with the former president, who died on 17 March, rather than focusing on the government's agenda. The president, who has been hailed for being unafraid to take the country in a new direction, said she and and her predecessor were "one thing" - and that she was focused on continuing the work that Magufuli had started. "We are supposed to be discussing and passing the government budgets...Let's work the way parliament is supposed to...," she said, speaking at a national conference organised by religious leaders in memory of the late president and to pray for the new leader...

Facebook board delays decision about Trump’s possible return.

Facebook's Oversight Board has delayed its decision regarding former US President Donald Trump's possible return to Facebook and Instagram. Trump was banned from Facebook in January after the Capitol Hill riots. The Board said the delay was due to the time it has taken to review over 9,000 public responses to cases. A decision was originally due by 21 April. In a statement on Twitter, the Board said it would make a decision "in the coming weeks". The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.  The ruling will be the biggest decision the Oversight Board has had to make since it started taking on cases last year. The Board was set up to rule on difficult or controversial moderation decisions made by Facebook. The 20-member committee, established ...

Rwandan priest arrested in France for alleged role in genocide.

A Rwandan priest was arrested in France this week on charges of providing, among other things, food to militiamen who massacred members of the Tutsi minority in his church during the 1994 genocide in the African country, authorities said Friday. Marcel Hitayezu, who was born in 1956, was charged on Wednesday with genocide and being an accomplice to crimes against humanity, according to the national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office. He was arrested the same day at his home in Montlieu-la-Garde, southwestern France, a source close to the case said. Prosecutors said Hitayezu was the priest at a church in Mubuga, in southern Rwanda, when the genocide took place and in April 1994 withheld food and water to Tutsis who had sought refuge in his church. He instead gave food to extre...
