UDA’s Njuguna wins Kiambaa by-election

The United Democratic Alliance party candidate had a narrow victory in the Kiambaa by-election. Njuguna Wanjiku of UDA has won against rival Kariri Njama of Jubilee in the concluded by-elections. According to the declaration by the IEBC at Karuri high school, Njuguna received 21,773 votes while Njama followed closely with 21,263 votes. Although there were eight aspirants, the contest narrowed down to a two-horse race pitting Jubilee and UDA. NCIC to ensure politicians notorious for hate speech don’t obtain visas

Notorious hate speakers will have a rough time getting visas to some foreign countries, NCIC chairman Samuel Kobia has said. Speaking during the launch of the IEBC Strategic Plan (2020-2024) on Tuesday, Kobia said he is in talks with about 15 envoys over the matter. “If we don’t give them visas, then they will behave. More so, those who incite violence should not be allowed to go to Europe or North America.. this will ensure that they stop behaving the way they do,” he said.  Noting that politicians are also human beings, Kobia said they have been pleasantly surprised that a number of politicians do not want to be shamed. “.. some pleaded saying they hope their name won’t be in the list of shame. This has made hate speech go down. These politicians don’...

Governors threaten to shut down counties for lack of funds

Governors have threatened to shut down counties next week, citing lack of funds to run operations. Through the Council of Governors, the county chiefs lamented the delayed disbursement of cash by the National Treasury, crippling operations and delivery of critical services to the residents. COG chairman Martin Wambora (Embu) said the Treasury is yet to release Sh102.6 billion to the 47 devolved units, with only two weeks left to the end of the financial year. As such, they have given an ultimatum to the Treasury to release the cash by Friday or they shut down the counties. "Unfortunately, if the National Treasury fails to release the funds, counties will not be able to offer basic services thereby forcing suspension of services or total shutdown by June 24," Wambora said. ...

Speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) where he was handing over the Agricultural Laboratory (ALB) building, Magoha acknowledged that some parents from well off families were taking advantage of an earlier directive where he had asked headteachers to be more lenient on matters regarding school fees. "Our population is a very interesting one. The majority of the people who are not paying fees can afford to pay," Magoha stated “I want to request, on behalf of government, that the Kenyan parents who are still denying paying the balance of their thir...

Israeli opposition heads agree to form gov’t, boot Netanyahu out

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has informed the country’s president that he can form a coalition government, a move that would bring an end to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s 12 years in power. Lapid, leader of the Yesh Atid party, was tasked with forming a government by President Reuven Rivlin after Netanyahu again failed to put together his own coalition following Israel’s fourth election in less than two years. In a statement shared on Twitter on Wednesday, Lapid said he had informed Rivlin of the deal. “This government will work for all the citizens of Israel, those that voted for it and those that didn’t. It will do everything to unite Israeli society,” he said shortly before a midnight deadline (21:00 GMT). Lapid, a former TV presenter a...
