DCI Launches Manhunt for Rowdy Protestors Captured on Camera

On Friday, March 24, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations announced that investigations were underway to arrest individuals captured on camera vandalising public property during the Monday, March 20 protests.  In a statement, the DCI ordered all individuals captured in the photos and footage shared from the demos to surrender themselves at the unit's headquarters before the close of business (5 pm) on Friday, March 24. Former Chief Justice Mutunga Appointed MUHURI Board Chair

Mutunga, who served as the country's Chief Justice from 2011 to 2016 was elected unanimously. He takes over from Khelef Khalifa. A statement by MUHURI noted that Mutunga's grasp of matters human rights and the law will help the body advance its goal of fighting impunity. "He brings an immense wealth of experience especially in the civil society and human rights sectors," the statement reads in part. MUHURI added that his track record of defending the law will help boost constitutionalism in Kenya. Mutunga joined the Mombasa-based non-governmental organization as a board member in 2021.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has called for an immediate probe into the manner in which police officers and protesters conducted themselves during the nationwide protests on Monday which turned chaotic. In a statement on Monday, the KNCHR chairperson Roseline Odede condemned the demonstrations which they established have resulted in "arrests, destruction of property, injuries and allegations of use of live bullets by the security agents." There is a standoff between police officers and protesters in the Nairobi CBD as demonstrations called by Azimio la Umoja kicked off.  Police have been engaged in running battles as they lob teargas to disperse protesters across the city.  At around 10.00 am, a delegation of Azimio MPs led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna stormed the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). The senator and the protesters scampered as teargas was lobbed, with those who had started gathering outside KICC also taking cover. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday arrested the Tana River chief finance officer in possession of Ksh2.7 million at Malindi Airport on her way to Nairobi. According to a source at the commission, got an intelligence report from its coastal regional office that Mariam Bunu had been intercepted at the airport with some Ksh.6 M in cash that she could not account for.  Officers were then dispatched to the airport where they seized documents showing that she was travelling to Nairobi for "official duty." SGR To Go Cashless From February

Kenya Railways (KR) plans to implement cashless ticketing on its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) service beginning February 1, 2022. According to a statement issued by KR on Wednesday, passengers will no longer be able to pay for tickets at all Madaraka Express Passenger Service Stations on the aforementioned date and will be required to use cashless at all service points. Customers have been advised to use M-Pesa, debit, or credit cards to pay. Until now, the SGR operates two pairs of trains between Nairobi and Mombasa, with departures at 8 a.m., 3 p.m., and 10 p.m. First-rate coaches cost Ksh.3000 for adults and Ksh.1500 for children aged 3 to 11. The Economy coach costs Ksh.1000 per adult trip and Ksh.500 for children aged 3 to 11.

Former Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has passed on. Prof. Magoha is said to have died at a Nairobi hospital following a cardiac arrest. He was sworn into office at the helm of the Education ministry on March 26, 2019 and served up to oct 2022 when President William Ruto named his successor. He only recently joined maseno university as a professor in the Department of School of Medicine.
