Former IEBC Boss James Oswago Jailed For 4 Years

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO James Oswago has been jailed for four years after he was found guilty of irregular award of a Ksh1.3 billion tender for the supply of voter materials in the 2013 General Election. The Anti-Corruption Court on Monday ordered Oswago and his deputy, Wilson Shollei, to each pay a fine of Ksh. 7,500,000 or in default serve a total jail term of 4 years for two counts.  Senior Principal Magistrate Felix Kombo found the two officials guilty of abuse of office and wilful failure to comply with the procurement laws. Property of unknown value has been destroyed following a fire incident in the wee hours of Thursday morning at Gikomba Market. According to reports the fire broke out at Jua Kali area razing down shedloads of stalls, with traders now calling for a lasting solution to the perennial fires. Meanwhile, traders and firefighters are at the scene in efforts to put out the inferno. Over the years, a number of fires have ravaged Gikomba market, East Africa's largest open market.  In October 2017, the government said that it had laid a Ksh.19 billion blueprint to construct a multi-storey market where the more than 20,000 Gikomba traders were to be accommodated as well as ensure an end to the frequent fires. Three Women Killed As Gold Mine Collapses In West Pokot

Three women were killed and two others were injured when the walls of a mine they were digging collapsed on Wednesday morning in West Pokot's Nyelnyel area. According to Ptokoch Sub-location Deputy Chief Flomena Karotich, the women, aged 20 to 32, had gone to mine for gold on the mine when the walls collapsed and buried them alive. Karotich stated that residents in the area were quick to respond to the incident and immediately began rescue operations, which began around 3 a.m. and were able to retrieve the bodies of the three by 7 a.m. However, Karotich has urged area residents to pursue other business opportunities and abandon mining, citing the dangers it poses to human life. Two passengers travelling to Mombasa on Tuesday evening caused drama after the airline alledged gave their seats to two white passengers. In exchange Jambo jet offered the two gentlemen seats at the back. According to the passengers the drama lasted upto One hour thirty minutes which led to cancellation of the flight. One of the passengers stripped naked acusing Jambo jet of racism,both men were later arrested for causing disturbance. They spent the night and are currently being processed for release.

11 Killed In Fire At Uganda School For The Blind

Eleven people have been killed in a blaze that tore through a school for the blind in central Uganda in the early hours of Tuesday, police said. "The cause of the fire is currently unknown but so far 11 deaths as a result of the fire have been confirmed while six are in critical conditions and admitted (to hospital)," the Uganda Police Force said on Twitter. The disaster occurred at about 1 am (2200 GMT Monday) at the Salama School for the Blind in Mukono, southeast of the capital Kampala. Police said an investigation had been launched into the cause of the fire but did not specify if the victims were all students at the school. Suspect in murder of Ida Odinga’s bodyguard to be arraigned in court

The suspect in the murder of Ida Odinga's bodyguard will be arraigned in a Kisumu court on Monday. Collins Oulo Okundi was arrested in Eldoret on Sunday after he surrendered to the police. The suspect was ferried from Eldoret on Monday morning and is currently at the Kisumu High Court cell. A pistol believed to be that of the slain officer was recovered during the arrest. Okundi, a manager at a popular club, is currently being held at Kisumu Central Police station. According to sources, the investigation team will be seeking custodial orders to detain the suspect for more days as they continue with the probe. Kisumu county police commander Alphonse Kimanthi had on Sunday confirmed that the suspect will be arraigned on Monday.

60-Year-Old Man in Garissa Loses Eye After Attack By Hyena

A 60-year-old man was left nursing serious injuries to his face following an attack by a marauding hyena in Raya village, Garissa county. Mzee Abdi Afi Mohamud suffered deep bite wounds around his face area and limbs following what residents termed as an unprovoked attack by the hyena. The old man is said to have been out grazing his herd of goats when the hyena suddenly emerged from the bushes and attacked his flock. “The old man tried to scare away the hyena after it attacked his goat, only for the wild animal to turn on him ferociously,” a source told Wananchi Reporting.
