Three People Found on top of rudder of a ship Survived An 11-Day Voyage From Nigeria

The Spanish coast guard has rescued three people who were stowed on top of the rudder of a ship that arrived in the Canary Islands from Nigeria. In a photograph distributed by the coastguard on Monday, the migrants are shown perched on the rudder of the oil and chemical tanker Althini II. The Althini II arrived in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria on Monday after an 11-day voyage from Lagos in Nigeria, according to Marine Traffic, a ship-tracking website. The migrants were taken into the port and attended to by health services, the coastguard said on Twitter. The Spanish-owned Canary Islands are a popular gateway for African migrants attempting to reach Europe. Spanish data shows migration by sea to the archipelago jumped 51% in the first five months of the year compared to a yea...

WHO Renames Monkeypox As ‘Mpox’

The World Health Organization announced Monday that “mpox” is now the preferred name for monkeypox. “Both names will be used simultaneously for one year while ‘monkeypox’ is phased out,” the organization said. The Biden administration said they “welcome the change” and the US will use the mpox name “from this point forward.” Monkeypox was named in 1970, more than a decade after the virus that causes the disease was discovered in captive monkeys, the organization said. But monkeypox probably didn’t start in monkeys – its origin is still unknown – and the virus can be found in several other kinds of animals.  The name was created before WHO published best practices for naming diseases in 2015. Scientists and experts have pushed since the start of ...

Popular Philippine Radio Journalist Gunned Down

A popular Philippine radio host and prominent critic of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte was shot and killed late Monday night. Authorities say Percival Mabasa was sitting in his car outside his home in Las Pinas when two people on a motorcycle opened fire and later escaped. Mabasa, known professionally as Percy Lapid, accused Philippine government officials of corruption and other abuses and irregularities on his popular radio program for decades. The New York Times says Mabasa criticized ex-President Duterte’s violent anti-drug campaign and perceived attempts by supporters of the Marcos family to portray the current president’s father, who ruled the Philippines as a dictator from 1965 to 1986, as a victim of his political enemies. Maba...

The Obamas Returned To The White House For The First Time In Years To See Their Portraits Unveiled

Former president Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, on Wednesday made their first official visit to the White House since leaving in 2017 to see their official portraits unveiled. It's a tradition started in 1978 by Jimmy Carter that was broken when Donald Trump refusedto host his predecessor. But on Wednesday in the East Room, President Joe Biden rolled out the welcome mat, calling Barack Obama one of the most "consequential presidents in history." Barack Obama thanked Sharon Sprung, the artist who painted Michelle in a blue dress as she's seated on a sofa in the Red Room, for capturing everything he loves about his wife, including her "grace, her intelligence, and the fact that she's fine." Barack Obama then thanked Robert McCurdy for his photorealistic portrait, saying h...

Trump Florida Home Raided By FBI

Former US president Donald Trump said Monday that his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida was being "raided" by FBI agents in what he called an act of "prosecutorial misconduct." The FBI declined to comment on whether the search was happening or what it might be for, nor did Trump give any indication of why federal agents were at his home -- a situation that adds to the legal pressures on the ex-president. Multiple US media outlets cited sources close to the investigation as saying that agents were conducting a court-authorized search related to the potential mishandling of classified documents that had been sent to Mar-a-Lago. In a statement posted on his Truth Social network, Trump said his "beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, an...

Floods In Seoul Kill Seven

Subway stations and major roads were underwater in the South Korean capital Seoul after record-breaking rains caused severe flooding, with at least seven people dead and seven more missing, officials said Tuesday. Authorities warned there was more rain to come even as emergency workers struggled to clear the hulks of flooded cars, which AFP reporters saw strewn across major intersections throughout the city. Dramatic images shared on social media late Monday showed people wading through waist-deep water, metro stations overflowing, and cars half-submerged in Seoul's posh Gangnam district, which was particularly hard-hit when torrential rain battered the city. The downpour that began Monday is the heaviest rainfall in South Korea in 80 years, according to Seoul's Yonhap News A...
