Eritrea’s Isaias visits Sudanese leaders amid Ethiopia tensions.

Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki is in Khartoum for talks with Sudanese officials, in a two-day visit taking place amid tensions between the governments of Ethiopia, a close ally of the Eritrean leader, and Sudan. Accompanied by Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and presidential adviser Yemane Ghebreab, Isaias was received on Tuesday at the Sudanese capital’s international airport by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s ruling sovereign council. The two leaders then began closed talks on cooperation and ways to strengthen ties between their countries, according to a statement from the council. Trump launches his own communication website.

Donald Trump has launched a new "communications" website, which says it will publish content "straight from the desk" of the former US president. Trump was banned by Twitter and suspended by Facebook and YouTube after the Capitol riots in January. The former president has since been releasing statements by press release - which the new website will now host. Users will be able to like posts - and also share them on Twitter and Facebook accounts. The move comes a day before a decision is due from Facebook's Oversight Board on whether to permanently ban Trump. Trump's senior adviser, Jason Miller, had previously said a new social media platform was to be launched. "This new platform is going to be big," he said in March. ut Miller tweeted on Tuesday that the new w...

44 Killed,150 Hurt at Religious festival in Israel.

At least 44 people have been killed in a stampede at a religious festival in the north-east of Israel. The national emergency service Magen David Adom (MDA) said dozens more had been wounded at the Lag B'Omer festival, at the foot of Mount Meron. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described it as a "heavy disaster" and said he was praying for the casualties. Tens of thousands reportedly attended, making it the largest event in Israel since the coronavirus pandemic began. Dozens of ambulances attended the scene and emergency services laid out bodies under foil covers on the ground. Police asked everyone at the site to evacuate. Emergency officials said 38 people were in critical condition at the site, with six more critically injured but evacuated and scores more wou...

US President Joe Biden has laid out a sweeping investment plan for jobs, education and social care.

Delivered on the eve of his 100th day in office, the Democrat pitched some $4 trillion (£2.9tn) in spending - the largest overhaul of US benefits since the 1960s, analysts say. He called it a "once in a generation investment in America itself". But the plans face a battle in Congress before they can become law. There has been widespread opposition to the proposals from the Republican Party, which is unlikely to back tax increases and more government spending. And while there is a slim Democratic majority in both houses, there has been division among the party over how far to go with the plans. Minneapolis on edge as jury deliberates Chauvin verdict.

The prosecution told jurors that Mr Chauvin had murdered Mr Floyd, but the defence said their client had correctly followed police training. The court is being protected by barbed wire, high barriers and armed soldiers from the National Guard. Cities across the country are bracing for protests regardless of the verdict. On Monday, the prosecution and defence made their closing statements in a trial that lasted three weeks. The prosecution then had another opportunity to rebut defence arguments before the jury was sent to deliberate. The jury will be sequestered to consider testimony from 45 witnesses, including doctors, use-of-force experts, police officers, bystanders and people who were close to Mr Floyd. The defendant is charged with second-degree unintentional murde...

Ethiopia declares state of emergency in Amhara.

Ethiopia has declared a state of emergency in the southern part of Amhara regional state amid violence in various towns. In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry of Defense said the last three days saw deadly armed violence in the town of Ataye and several other areas in Oromia special zones. The statement said an unspecified number of people were killed in attacks by gunmen and property was destroyed. It added that many civilians fled the armed conflict. The Amhara region is dominated by the ethnic Amhara group – Ethiopia’s second-largest – but the Oromo special zone is populated mainly by Oromos, the numerically dominant group. The declaration of emergency came a day after Ethiopia’s military deployed troops to the North Shoa zone and Oromo special zone. The move u...

Somalia’s president mandate extended for 2 years.

Somalia’s president has signed a controversial law extending his mandate for two years, the state news agency reported. “President Mohamed Abdullahi (Farmajo) has tonight signed the direction of one person, one vote law which was unanimously passed by parliament on April 14,” the statement issued by the Minister of Information Osman A Dubbe late on Tuesday night said. President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s four-year term expired in February without a successor. The new head of state was meant to be chosen by a new crop of legislators, but their own selection was delayed after opponents accused the president of packing regional and national elections boards with his own supporters.  Monday the lower house of Somalia’s parliament voted to extend his term but the move was...

Minnesota police shooting of Black man sparks fresh protests.

Fresh protests broke out Tuesday night in Minneapolis despite a curfew implemented after a police officer fatally shot a young Black man when she confused her handgun with her taser, fuelling tensions in a US city already on edge because of the George Floyd murder trial. Shortly before 9pm local time, nearly two hours after the curfew went into effect, dozens of protesters continued to wave signs and chant slogans in front of the police station in Brooklyn Center, where Sunday's killing occurred. Police fired tear gas at the protesters several times and ordered them to disperse. This was the second consecutive night of protests after 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot dead by police while driving with his girlfriend. In police body camera video released earlier Monday in B...
