Gunmen In Nigeria Kill A Dozen People, Abduct Others From Mosque

Gunmen in Nigeria killed a dozen worshippers, including an imam, and kidnapped several others from a mosque on Saturday night, local residents said on Sunday, in the latest attack by armed gangs in the north of the country. Armed gangs, known as bandits, attack communities where security is stretched, killing people or kidnapping them for ransom. The gangs also demand villagers pay protection fees to be allowed to farm and harvest their crops. Lawal Haruna, a resident of Funtua, in President Muhammadu Buhari's home state of Katsina, told Reuters by phone that the gunmen arrived at Maigamji mosque on motorbikes and started shooting sporadically, which forced worshippers to flee. About 12, who were attending night prayers, were caught in the gunfire and killed, including the ch...

Uganda Arrests Eight Protesting Over Living Costs

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni says his government will not intervene in the current economic situation amid a rising cost of living. Prices of petroleum products, imported raw materials and food have been rising in recent months, a crisis being experienced globally following the war in Ukraine. In a televised national address on Sunday night, Mr Museveni said that government subsidies or removal of import taxes would collapse the economy. There would be a haemorrhage of dollars from the national reserves for the purchase of those expensive products, he added. Mr Museveni said Uganda will need to frugally use the imported items it can afford. He advised citizens to substitute expensive wheat with locally available food such as millet, maize, green bananas and cassava...

Suspected monkeypox probed in Morocco and Sudan

Morocco and Sudan are investigating suspected cases of monkeypox, Africa’s health body says. This comes after outbreaks of the virus have recently been found in Europe, Australia, America and the Middle East. Monkeypox is usually associated with travel to central or West Africa, near tropical forests, but some of the new cases have no travel link. r Ahmed Ogwell, deputy director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control (CDC), confirmed there was still no direct link. He said the continent had so far reported 1,405 cases and 62 monkeypox-related deaths this year - a case fatality rate of 4.4% These have occurred in four countries where the disease is endemic: Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria. Dr Ogwell said all Afri...

Tensions Rise Ahead Of DR Congo Presidential Election

DR Congo's presidential election is over a year away, but political tensions are escalating in the vast and volatile country as candidates line up and fears grow the vote will be fraudulent. Elections in the central African nation frequently turn violent, with dozens of protesters killed. They are also often criticised by observers. But the last presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in 2018, heralded the first peaceful transfer of power in Kinshasa since independence from Belgium in 1960. The vote was nonetheless marred by accusations of irregularities and the European Union and others cast doubt over its credibility. According to official results, incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi won, replacing former leader Joseph Kabila after 18 years in power. ...

Tanzania Raises Minimum Wage By Nearly 25%

Tanzania's president on Saturday approved a nearly 25-percent increase in the minimum wage, marking a departure from the policies of her autocratic predecessor amid protests about the high cost of living. President Samia Suluhu Hassan decided on an increase of 23.3 percent, while also increasing the salaries of government workers for the first time since 2016, her office said in a statement. "The salary increment was approved considering the country's gross domestic product, domestic revenue and developments in both the local and global economies," the presidency said. Since coming to power last year following her predecessor John Magufuli's death, Hassan has attempted to break with some of his policies by reaching out to the opposition and reversing course on his approach to...
