Former President Uhuru demands peace talks on The Eastern DRC crisis

Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for peace talks between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) . Through his Spokesperson Kanze Dena, Kenyatta, as the facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi Process, noted there is an urgent need for renewed peace talks between the warring States. The EAC-led Nairobi Process is a regional peace initiative aimed at resolving the conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He also noted that an earlier ceasefire negotiated was dishonoured, slowing down peace and diplomatic negotiations agreed in the peace process. "Despite efforts to maintain dialogue between Kenyatta, (Congo President) Felix Tshisekedi and the M23 rebels the political situation in Eastern DRC became increasingly unstable," Kanze state...

Liberia’s presidential race goes to run-off

A run-off election will be held next month in Liberia following a photo finish between President George Weah and his main rival Joseph Boakai. Mr Weah got 43.83% of the vote and Mr Boakai, a former vice-president, received 43.44%. The 10 October poll was the tightest presidential contest in Liberia since a civil war ended about two decades ago. A run-off was predicted, but Mr Boakai, 78, has done better than expected by coming close to Mr Weah's tally. A second round was triggered as neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the first round. The run-off is due to take place on 14 November, the head of the electoral commission Davidetta Browne said after announcing the final results. Mr Boakai trailed Mr Weah in the first round of voting in the 2017 electio...

Senegal Opposition Leader Claims Assassination Attempt As Deadly Protests Flare

Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko claimed Monday to have survived an assassination attempt during his appearance at a politically charged trial that sparked deadly unrest last week. In a Facebook post that evening, Sonko said he was suffering "terrible dizziness", lower abdominal pain and breathing difficulties. "We sent the product that was sprayed on me to France to find out what it was," Sonko said from a private clinic in the capital Dakar on Monday. "It is an assassination attempt," he added. Authorities have not responded to the allegation. Violence...

Nigeria’s ruling party candidate Tinubu declared president-elect

Nigerians awoke to a new president Wednesday, with ruling party candidate Bola Tinubu declared the winner of the country’s election. As he thanked his supporters he appealed for reconciliation with his rivals, who are already demanding a revote in Africa’s most populous nation. The announcement by election officials overnight was likely to lead to a court challenge by the second- and third-highest finishers in the weekend vote, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. Abubakar also finished second in the previous vote in 2019, and appealed those results although his lawsuit ultimately was dismissed. Tinubu’s ruling All Progressives Congress party urged the opposition Tuesday to accept defeat and not cause trouble after they had demanded a revote, saying that delays in uploading elect...
