With the late former Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha set to be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Umiru, Siaya County on February 11, his family has given an update on the progress of his ongoing funeral arrangements.

Speaking at Magoha’s home in Lavington, Nairobi on Friday, Julius Jwan, the speaker of the late minister’s funeral arrangement committee, told journalists that Magoha’s interment will be preceded by a string of three-day-long events that will pay homage to the life of the late renowned scholar.

“On February 8, 2023, a farewell caravan shall proceed from Lee Funeral Home through some of the places that defined Prof. Magoha’s adult life including the College of Health Sciences at Kenyatta Hospital, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council headquarters and the Nigerian High Commission,” Jwan, who was flanked by Magoha’s kin and close friends, said.

“The caravan will also pass by St. George’s Primary School, the Kenya National Examination Council headquarters, State House Girl High School, the University of Nairobi Graduation Square and Starehe Boys Centre where he spent his secondary school life.”

On February 9, Magoha’s requiem mass will be held at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands from 9 am in line with the doctrines of catholicism.

“On February 10, the body will arrive at Township Primary School in Yala at 1 pm before a procession leading up to St. Mary’s High School Yala and subsequently a holy mass to follow at his home in Umiru,” said Jwan.

“It should be remembered that in his last tour of duty as CS Education, Magoha was always in the midst of children and students. This explains why we are focusing on the schools where he had a major impact on learners.”

Magoha’s funeral mass service will be held on February 11 at Odera Kango University in Yala from 10 am.

“The family notes with gratitude the immense love for and high regard with which the late Magoha was held by Kenyans from all works of life,” Jwan said.

“We want to particularly thank the media for the extensive empathetic and reflective coverage that you have accorded this major loss to the Kenyan society.”

A subsequent update on Magoha’s funeral arrangements will be offered by the family on Tuesday, February 7, at his Lavington home.
