The Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) has introduced a new dress code barring female students from wearing tumbo cuts and miniskirts as well as various other clothing the institution has deemed inappropriate.
In a memo dated January 5, 2022, Dean of Students Dr. Esther Mbaabu noted that female students who wear see through clothing and body tight trousers will be in breach of the newly introduced dress code.
“All students are required to comply with the University code of dressing and wear appropriate attire during study, at meal times in the dining hall and in all university functions,” said Dr. Mbaabu in the memo.
Tumbo cuts, bare back clothing, miniskirts, skirts and dresses whose slits are above the knee line, blouses whose necklines run down more than 4 inches, body tight trousers and see through clothes will be considered as inappropriate dressing.”
Male students have likewise been prohibited from keeping dreadlocks and plaited hair, wearing earrings and walking around in untucked shirts.
They have also been barred from wearing vests that expose their chests and caps during class or when visiting any of the institution’s administrative offices
