An aspiring Member of County Assembly (MCA) eyeing Meru County’s Muthara Ward seat has been arrested in connection to a string of fraud-related robbery cases reported across the country.
NARC Kenya party’s Benson Thuranira Kathiai is accused of fraudulently obtaining Ksh.415,000 from different M-Pesa agents in Nakuru, Shauri Moyo, Busia and Meru on separate occasions.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Thuranira could be the mastermind of the notorious ‘Confirm’ gang in Nakuru County.
“Thuranira who is vying for the Muthara ward seat was arrested by detectives, following numerous complaints from Mpesa agents who had lost money to his machinations,” said the DCI in a statement.
“In Nakuru, the thug obtained Ksh.100, 000 from two M-PESA agents before he obtained a further Ksh.135,000 in Shauri Moyo, Ksh. 60,000 in Busia and Ksh. 120,000 in Meru before he was finally arrested.”
Thuranira will remain in police custody until May 30, 2022 when he is expected to be arraigned at the Nakuru Law Courts and charged with fraud.
Detectives have urged Kenyans who might have fallen victim to the fraudster to report the matter to the nearest police station.
