The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company will shut down the water supply pipeline along Mombasa Road due to ongoing construction of the Expressway Highway.

The shutdown will take place on Thursday from 6am to October 1 at 6am.

In a notice on Wednesday, MD Nahason Muguna said the shutdown will facilitate interconnection of the relocated pipeline.

Areas to be affected include: JKIA, SGR, Athi River Export Processing Zone, Coca Cola, Mukuru, Imara Daima.

Estates and industries along North Airport road, Embakasi village, Tassia estate, General services Unit, administration police training schools and Nairobi inland container depot will also be affected.

Others include Estates long Jogoo road including Makadara, Bahati and Maringo among other adjacent areas and the whole of industrial area and adjacent areas.

“We appeal to our customers for indulgence and urge them to use available water sparingly as we work towards restoring the supply,”  Muguna said.

“… to the old pipeline from the junction of Bunyala road and Uhuru highway road to the junction of Lusaka/langata road and Mombasa road,” Muguna said.

Muguna said this will enable release of the road median to the Expressway road contractor.

The expressway construction has turned Nairobi into a nightmare with cars piling up for hours during rush hour.

Overlapping and resulting accidents have become a common feature, despite deployment of additional traffic police. Billions of shillings have been set aside for traffic management.

KeNHA had on June 6 directed the contractor in charge of the Sh65 billion project to implement a better traffic management system on Mombasa Road.

This came after concerns regarding increased traffic snarl-ups on the major highway were raised by motorists as well as claims of poor traffic management by the contractor.

The 18.5km road starts at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and ends at the James Gichuru Junction along Waiyaki Way in Westlands.

The official name is the JKIA-James Gichuru Expressway.

In January 2021, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia gazetted the expressway as a toll road.
