A man has been arrested in connection with robberies in Nyali, Mombasa county.
Abdulmanaf Omar 29, is part of a three-gang that bundled a Nigerian national in his hired car before robbing him off.
The Nigerian narrated how he hired a Toyota Spade from a Omar on July 19, 2021 at Sh135,000, being an entire month’s fee.
“They had agreed that the victim would return the vehicle on August 18, only for the car hire dealer to turn rogue and breach the agreement,” director George Kinoti said.
Via social media on Saturday, Kinoti said on the fateful night, Omar and two other men dressed in civilian clothes.
But he noted that they introduced themselves as police officers, knocked at the victim’s door within Emirates Reef Apartments seeking to have a word with him outside the house.
“Once outside, the two alleged officers handcuffed the victim, before tossing him in the Toyota Spade and driving off,” Kinoti said.
“Against their word that they were taking him to Central Police Station, the trio drove towards Mombasa Old Town, where they stole Sh76, 720 from the car and the victim’s wrist watch valued at Sh120,000. “
Kinoti said the gang then called the victim’s 26-yr-old wife and demanded a ransom of Sh50,000.
“Once she complied, by sending the money, the victim was thrown out of the vehicle and the thugs disappeared,” Kinoti said.
“Unbeknownst to the gang, several CCTV cameras erected on various locations within the town had captured them in their robbery mission.”
Detectives have launched a manhunt for the gang.
